writers in common

Being a graduate of San Francisco State University I automatically get the Alumni quarterly magazine. I usually put the magazine aside and read it when I get a chance. This month for some strange reason I decided to read it from beginning to end because I was intrigued by the articles about the number of well-known authors/writers, who have attended the university in the past, being recognized for their recent publications.  I must say I am impressed and even more motivated to continue writing my novels. Anyway, based on the article, SFSU has made a summer reading suggestion list, which I would like to share with all of you.  So here it goes: 1. Every Day In Tuscany by Frances Mayes (M.A. 75) and one of my favorite authors. 2 Loving Frank by Nancy Horan (71-76 attendee) 3. Supergirls by Mike Madrid (B.A. 84) 4. Maid as Muse by Aife Murray (M.A. 94) my graduating class 5. Naked Drunk by Adair Lara (B.A. 76) – for sure my read this summer 6. Guest House by Barbara …

sex in which city, i ask?

As you know or can already tell, I have an opinion on  just about anything and everything. I can’t help it and as I always say, I am entitled to voicing it not because of my right as an American but because I am a woman over 40.  (We have special privileges you know) With that said, I have to take a moment and comment on the film Sex and The City 2 and attempt at impacting women over 40. I remember when the show first aired on HBO, I was probably one of the first (in my circle) to take a peak and recommend it to all my friends and by the time season 2 aired, all of my acquaintances were glued to their television sets when the show came on and I was busy doing other things. Truly it was a craze and when the show ended, probably only a handful of woman including myself, didn’t give a damn one way or another – after all I had better things to do with my time… Well, when the …

angelina’s Cafe

I must have driven by Angelina’s Cafe on California Street and 22nd (in the Richmond District in San Francisco) about a hundred times and said to myself, wow what a cute place, I have to go there sometimes. Well, finally today, after years of contemplating and planning, I finally decided to eat breakfast there after my one hour walk. As I parked my car half a block from the corner where Angelina’s Cafe is situated, I got a great feeling in my stomach as I walked by the French bistro table and chairs lined along the outside of the cafe. When I entered through the door, I noticed the customers lined up along the deli counter, waiting to order their food. Some were holding on to their dog’s leashes. I instantly knew I would love this place since they allowed dogs to be in the store. (Just in case you are wondering, I feel dogs should be allowed everywhere) I ordered a sesame bagel with eggs, cheddar cheese and bacon and was asked if I …

poached halibut with saffron fennel cream

I love it when grocery stores give a complimentary booklet or a magazine advertising their products with a few good recipes. I collect them all and use them frequently. I found this amazing recipe on Nugget Market’s website and magazine and it is amazing to say the least. Here it is – enjoy 4 Halibut fillets Court Boullion: 4 cups water 2 cups white wine 1 yellow onion, quartered 2 ribs celery, rough chopped 1 bay leaf 1 fennel frond, rough chopped, reserve one more for garnish 12 to 15 whole peppercorns 1 lemon, juiced Fennel Cream: 1 pint cream 1 head fennel, small dice 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon saffron salt and pepper to taste Preparation Court Boullion: Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan.  Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.  Strain.  Fennel Cream: Combine the ingredients and bring up to a simmer over medium-low heat.  Reduce the cream by half.  This should take 10 to 15 minutes. Puree and season to taste with salt and pepper. …

t-shirt frenzy

Is it my imagination or t-shirts now a days are made of parchment paper? I understand the whole, let’s cater to the young and skinny as they are the ones who shop and spend money. Let us also make the clothes so that after one wear, you toss and buy another one. I get it, but… For the woman over 40, that concept is not good enough. Women over 40 and mind you those with young children, need t-shirts that will withstand the test of ketchup stains, detergent and various other marks put on as a result of ongoing and everlasting chores. So, while I have searched high and low for some good quality t-shirts I stumbled upon Eddie Bauer and their selection of “pretty good quality” adult t-shirts. Of course the sale they are having now also helps, but at least I know I can do my thing without being worried about the parchment look.

you say chocolate and i say chocolat

Chocolate, of course is one of those things that “most” everyone and anyone loves and is probably addicted to. Well on that note, I want to introduce my readers to Coco Bella Chocolate from San Francisco. It is probably the best northern California purveyor of the best chocolatiers from around the world. The store design is a great representation of what you will experience while shopping and purchasing their quality chocolate. With white marble granite counters and dark mahogany cabinetry displaying the chocolate selection from around the world, it makes for a happy purchase. You walk around the glass display case selecting the pieces displayed by continent order, and the knowledgeable sales person walks along with you while holding a silver tray in order to collect your selections as you point to them. By this point you already feel super special. Then of course you finalize your selection and walk to the register, where they ask if you want a brown or white satin ribbon on your exquisite blue box of chocolate and after you …

i could have played that role

Someone once asked me what role do I see myself playing or could have played (for movies gone past) if I were given a chance. Of course this topic is my fave since my lifelong passion is to become a movie star (you laugh eh?)and so I can honestly see myself in the following roles should I be given or were given a chance to play: Princess Ann (Roman Holiday)A bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome (AT 20) Sarah Jordan (Beyond Borders) – A woman in a loveless marriage, bored out of her head volunteers to do goodwill work around the world and ends up meeting the man of her dreams. (AT 30) Miranda Priestly (The Devil Wears Prada) – A ruthless, cynical, yet successful magazine editor with a killer wardrobe and a career to die for. (AT 45)
