healthy recipe: beet tartine and goat cheese

I found a recipe here, which included one of my favorite vegetables – beets and the fact it is marinated, and eaten with goat cheese make it even more appetizing, not to mention the fact it is one of the best ways to detox. Beet Tartine with Marinated Caper Berries Serves 2 Ingredients: 2 medium-sized beets 4 slices whole-grain rye bread (check the ingredient list for suspicious ingredients) soft goat cheese / chèvre (optional) handful marinated caper berries fresh rosemary sea salt + cracked black pepper Directions: 1. With the skin still on, wrap beets individually in foil and roast in a 400°F / 200°C oven for at least one hour, until you can easily pierce the beet with a sharp knife. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Unwrap and slide skins off. Slice into desired shapes. 2. Since I follow the red carpet fashion trends, I have noticed most celebrities have conformed to a uniform look just so they could pass the fashion police critique.  While that is acceptable, it seems they have compromised a sliver of their bold and daring creative side, at least in my opinion. I hope this year is a little different and we can actually see a little bit of daring and unique fashion like the ones I have picked out below.

san francisco gem: the ferry building

I love it when friends show up in town unannounced and beg to spend a day with you.  I really mean it, I do love it, even though it throws me pleasantly off schedule (If that makes sense). Anyway, I got the word my friends were in town at ten in the morning and asked them to meet me at the end of Market Street at noon for lunch.  When I asked, what they wanted to eat, they mentioned Sandwich shops and fast food and I basically rolled my eyes. I pointed to the Ferry Building and asked if they had been there and they both shook their heads NO and so we ventured into one of our proudest conversion of a historic building into an amazing waterfront hangout.

seeking simply therapy at the flower market

Wow, I have to say this week has been a challenge. It happens to the best of us on occassion. But when I came home after work and slept for over twelve hours the other night, I realized I needed something to change the mood I’ve been in. So, on Thursday, I walked to the Flower Mart in San Francisco and admired the array of flowers on display so much that I actually brought some home and I have to tell you, I had forgotten how wonderful flowers make me feel.

cold weather blues

I never thought I would say this, but since we’ve had freezing temperatures throughout most of California, I have literally shut down in more ways than I imagined could be possible.  The strange thing about this weather, which is holding steady at 34ish in the city and 28 or less in the suburbs, is that people actually hibernate and that makes for a dreary day, almost every day this week. What’s happened to everyone? There was a point during my lunch hour on Monday and Tuesday, that I walked through Union Square and was able to count the number of people in the streets and as for the retail shops, the sales clerks outnumbered the cliental in most any store I walked through. This is a hard thing to see right after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.   The worst about this weather is that all I  crave for is comfort food and find it difficult to stay focused on my brand new eating plan.  In addition to the food cravings, it seems I have also lost my creativity …

healthy eating: yogurt with caramelized figs

While adjusting to my new eating regiment (going on week three), I have to incorporate at least 6oz of plain yogurt with some sort of fresh fruit on a daily basis. Since the recipe never indicated which brand of yogurt to consider, I decided to go with my favorite yogurt complimented with fresh organic  blueberries. I loved the combination until of course I came across this recipe and my world hasn’t been the same since: Yogurt topped with Caramelized Figs 1 cup Yogurt of choice (I used Fage Plain Yogurt) 2 Figs, halved 3 Tbsp Organic Agave Sprinkles of Pistachio Nuts Dashes of Ground Cinnamon To caramelize the figs, add agave to a small skillet and place figs face down. Simmer over low heat until browned and toasty smelling (3-4 minutes). Place yogurt into bowl, drizzle over caramelized figs and sprinkle over pistachios and dashes of cinnamon. {click here for photo credit}
