a ghastly story: the phantom of the opera

I love reading about the story behind the story. I do it for all films and write  about it of course here. So, it’s no wonder that I stumbled upon this story and had to share it. I think I became a fan of The Phantom of the Opera when I saw the performance on stage in San Francisco circa in the 90s. But what solidified my admiration of the musical was seeing it with Gerard Butler years later.  At least I admit it :).  The interesting part about it is that I’ve gone to Paris at least once a year, if not twice for decades, and never once considered setting foot inside the Garnier Opera House. I’ve made a trip to the area, and stood across the street from the monumental building admiring it from the outside, always feeling too eery to go inside. Then of course I found this story, reading it at some ungodly hour of the morning – to be exact at 3:00 a.m. when I couldn’t stay asleep anymore, my …

something’s going on

Every year around this time – always nearing September – I feel a little uninspired, and overly emotional. I think it’s the impending season change. I rectified this problem  in recent years with a two-week trip to Europe  – the first part of September. Which helped in the transition of changing seasons and all. This year however, I won’t be doing that. Instead I am going to stay local, and take a very short trip down to Los Angeles to unwind and reflect – planning how 2015 would pan out. Yes, one may believe it’s too early but not for me. I have way too much to do next year, and need to plan. In the meantime, I try to stay a little distracted, by writing, working on my third novel, and by finding photos online to help me escape. This photo, although not my decor style, for some reason put a smile on my face. Perhaps because it reminded me of my aunt’s house in South of France – whimsical, light, airy and very …

minimalist home decor

When I was younger, my decor style tended to lean towards shabby chic or French Provincial – but lately, after downsizing my life. (Moving from a five bedroom/three bath/two-story to a 1 bedroom studio loft, I realized I want all things minimalist. Decor, food, lifestyle and even holidays/vacations. So when I stumbled upon this magnificent blog/website, I saved the ideas on Pinterest, sharing some of them here with all of you. I love the great use of color and balance throughout each room. Very peaceful, fresh and airy.

stroll along the neighborhoods in san francisco

I love the city, but hate the cold summer days near ocean beach. So, I decided on sunday to ditch the car and go for a walk. A long walk across town from SeaCliff to  inland, aiming to get to Fillmore street in time for lunch. I had originally planned to walk to the Golden Gate Bridge, but the cold and windy weather discouraged that idea. Of course all of this had to happen before the US-Portugal soccer game at 3pst. Along the way, I took photos as usual, of things I felt stood out, captivating me someway or another. Of course I had to censor the addresses 🙂

transforming a city: san francisco

In the last year or so, while attempting to escape the office during the lunch hour, aiming  to find solitude, I have realized as I walk the pavement that at this very moment, there isn’t any in downtown San Francisco. The city is going through a transformation, well planned for decades ago and one I hope to see or experience before I retire and move to the suburbs. There is construction everywhere, noise pollution intolerable, driving unbearable and yet, through each phase of renovation or new building erection or simply a makeover,so far most of the work is esthetically pleasing . The big regret is, I should have taken before and after photos of all that’s been done so far, transforming this great city I live in.

connecting history to present day in photography

I love history. Without it we are a doomed society and although I do my part to preserve and respect all things historical, understanding that’s what defines civilization, it’s not enough. Everyone needs to do their part or else the future is more bleak than suggested at this day in time. Okay. I’m done standing on a soap box 🙂 – On a much lighter note, here are some amazing photographs expressing our connection to the past. Click here to see the rest of the photographs
